Dr Bernardo Gallegos currently serves as Vice President for Development, Hanu University Division, Indian Pueblos Federal Development Corporation. Previously he has served as Professor at California State University, Los Angeles, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Distinguished Professor at Washington State University. Of mixed Native American heritage (Coyote), Dr. Gallegos grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where both his maternal and paternal families have lived for several centuries. Bernardo Gallegos has been a middle school teacher, youth counselor, and construction worker (roofer) in addition to being a university professor.
Bernardo P. Gallegos' research examines the history and politics of education and identity in the Americas with a focus on Native Americans and Latina's. He is the author of Literacy, Education, and Society in New Mexico, 1692-1821, as well as several articles, chapters, and reviews. He is co-editor and contributor to Performance Theories in Education: Power, Pedagogy, and the Politics of Identity; and co-editor of Indigenous Education and Epistemologies in the Americas: a Special Issue of Educational Studies.
Currently Dr. Bernardo Gallegos is working on a handbook and two manuscripts that are under contract. The Handbook for Social Foundations Research is a comprehensive manuscript that will feature over seventy entries showcasing the variety of work in the area of Social Foundations of Education. Dr. Gallegos is co-editor of the project along with two colleagues. The projected date for completion of this project is December of 2008.
